Rental booking tips and tricks:

Finding your best deal:

  • In the Hatteras area, The sooner you can book a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental properties are booked very early. Booking your vacation rental up to 12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of NC. To find the best rental within your budget, we highly recommend booking in Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Booking websites typically offer guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hatteras area visitor guides which often include money-saving deals, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Select vacation dates and spending budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Oceanfront, Amazing Sunrises, Dog Friendly, Private deck & Screened in Porch has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available online. If not, email the host before reserving the rental. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and some don't. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the host about pet restrictions before booking.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction? Use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. .

Some things to know before you go:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your .
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents quite a few issues.
  • Keep your rental home locked while you're out! Don't let burglars ruin your trip.
  • To make sure damages aren't attributed to your family's stay, note any problem areas upon check in. E-mail the rental manager immediately to record any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. You will magnify your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are a fantastic source for finding the best local spots.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Double-check every room of the vacation property to make sure that you've packed everything on check-out day. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental a final time and look for damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Leave a review! Hosts rely on great feedback to compel new reservations. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other families will appreciate that you share your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
