Our top Vacation rental home tips and tricks:
Sticking to your budget:
- The sooner you can book, the easier your search will be. The best vacation rentals are booked very early. Booking your rental property six - twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and book your rental property.
- Summertime is high season in the Hatteras area. To book the best vacation home within budget, we strongly suggest booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at popular attractions and restaurants. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Some hosts and property managers offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your family.
- Property management companies typically offer customers an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hatteras area visitor guide magazines which will include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Planning, picking, and booking your prefectrental:
- First, have your family select the best dates and a budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration you need. Ocean-view home with pool, private hot tub, W\/D - near the beach has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always accessible on booking pages. If not, reach out to the property manager before reserving your rental. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds.
- Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional fees or charges applied to your agreement.
- If there's an individual Hatteras beach you love, browse properties that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
Considerations for your stay:
- Get the host's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent lots of difficulties.
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are away, just like you would back home.
- During check-in, record any issues with the property and immediately alert the owner. Record all coorespondence.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Re-check the property to make sure that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Please make sure to walk through the rental one final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, ensure that you take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did you have a excellent stay? Many rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property manager was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
