Tips and Tricks to get the optimal vacation rental experience:

Sticking to your spending plan:

  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • To find the best rental home for your budget, we highly recommend booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at Hatteras restaurants, beaches, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Some property managers offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group.
  • Booking websites typically offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines have coupons for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Choose your dates and maximum budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Fun home with ocean view, washer\/dryer, outdoor pool access, and private hot tub has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is generally accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email or call the host before you book the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Pet fees or costs may be applied to your contract.
  • Are you looking for specific amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. .

Tips for a wonderful stay:

  • Add the property manager's phone number to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent quite a few difficulties.
  • Lock your vacation home while you are out. Protect your property!
  • Upon arrival, document any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the owner. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a great resource to find the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the property to make sure you've collected all belongings. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did you have a great time? Most rental managers make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property manager was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was out of order and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
