Our top Hatteras rental home tips:

Find your best deal:

  • In the Hatteras area, The sooner your group can book a vacation rental, the better your selection will be. The best vacation homes are booked early. Booking your vacation property six - twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and book your vacation home.
  • To find the best value, consider shifting your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Some property managers offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Property managers typically offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Many property management companies supply Hatteras area travel guide magazines which include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or through a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Choosing and booking the bestrental:

  • Start by selecting your vacation dates and a budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the configuration your group requires. Dog-friendly vacation home right off the sound with a private hot tub has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is normally accessible on booking pages. If not, reach out to the host before reserving the home. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly property. Make sure to ask for information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Does your family require unique amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Remember to confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental

Advice for your stay:

  • Add the property manager's phone number to your smartphone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are out, just like you would at home.
  • Document any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately send them to the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if a dispute is filed.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers disrupting your home life. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and places you would've never otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Re-check the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all belongings on check-out day. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did you have a fantastic stay? Most rental managers make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was wonderful, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
