Tips to get the optimal rental home experience:
When to visit & When to book:
- Summer is high season in the Hatteras area. To book the most suitable vacation home within budget, we strongly suggest booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at the beach and popular Hatteras attractions. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Property managers sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
- Property managers frequently offer customers an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
- Often, management companies supply Hatteras area visitors guides which include special offers, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
How to choose and book yourrental home:
- Select a group lead, choose your vacation dates, and select a maximum budget.
- Decide how many beds and the configuration your group requires. Dog-friendly vacation home right off the sound with a private hot tub has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras rentals search.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts is almost always accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email the property owner before you book the vacation property. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches.
- Are you visiting for a specific event? Try a map search to find nearby rentals.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking
- If your family is traveling with pets, you'll need to find a pet-friendly rental. Make sure to ask for details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
More tips for your stay:
- Get the host's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental. We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Make a record of any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately contact the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are beneficial if a dispute arises.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, intercom or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent many difficulties.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud visitors bothering your peace. Use the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and attractions you would have never otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently help. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Lock your rental property while you are out! Don't let burglars ruin your holiday.
- When it's time to leave, complete a walk-through to make sure you didn't forget any personal items. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a terrific time? Many rental management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or host was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
