Hatteras rental booking tips and tricks:
Sticking to your budget:
- In the Hatteras area, The sooner your group can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The best properties are booked early. Booking your vacation property six - twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental home.
- Reserving a rental home in the Fall or Spring is a good way to save on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Property management companies sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your property manager if special discounts are available for your family.
- Booking websites usually offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras area magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines have deals for local tours, shops, and attractions.
Make a plan and pick your prefectrental:
- Start by having your family choose a vacation week and a budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Dog-friendly vacation home right off the sound with a private hot tub has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always accessible on booking websites. Otherwise, contact the property owner before you reserve your home. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds.
- Some rental properties allow pets, and some don't. Acceptable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the property management company about your furry family members before booking.
- Are you visiting for a specific attraction or event? Try a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental.
During your stay:
- Add the host's contact info to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents a lot of problems.
- Lock your rental while you're out. Keep your property safe!
- At Check-in, document any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the owner. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the property to make sure you've collected all of your things. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Walk through the rental a final time and look for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the manager is not available, remember to take pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a fantastic time? Many rental management companies make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was out of order and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
