Tips to get the best Hatteras rental home experience:

When to visit Avon & When to reserve a Avon rental home:

  • Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer months are the most expensive season along the coast of NC. Booking a rental in the Fall or Spring is a good way to save money on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable properties.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Booking websites typically offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hatteras area travel guide magazines which often include special offers, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Start by having your group decide on the best dates and a spending budget.
  • Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Sound-view, renovated home with saltwater pool, hot tub, & game room has 7 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often accessible on booking pages. If they are not listed, reach out to the property manager before booking your home. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to work out which bed configuration is suitable for your trip.
  • If your group is bringing pets, you'll need to find a rental that allows animals. Get information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Usually, property owners charge additional pet fees.
  • Is your family looking for specific amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. .

Some things to know before you go:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the instructions to your phone.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, television set or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents a lot of issues.
  • Keep the property locked while you're away! Don't let burglars spoil your holiday.
  • Document any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are helpful if a dispute is filed.
  • Respect the neighborhood. Frequently, adjacent homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the rental to confirm you've collected all personal items. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property one final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, remember to take photos and video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a wonderful vacation? Many rental websites make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or host was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
