Tricks and tips for getting the best vacation property experience:

Sticking to a rental home budget:

  • Summer months are high season in the Hatteras area. Booking a rental in Fall or Spring is our favorite way to save money on your vacation rental. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable properties.
  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some property management companies offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your group before you book.
  • Booking websites usually offer renters an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Often, rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hatteras area visitor guides which will include coupons, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Make a plan and choose the perfect Hatteras vacation home:

  • Select a designated group leader, select your trip dates, and select a budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Oceanfront, dog-friendly condo with ocean view, central AC & WiFi has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts is almost always accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, call the property manager before you reserve the property. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds. You will need to determine what configuration is optimal for your trip.
  • Are you visiting for a specific attraction or event? Use a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or may be applied to your contract.

More tips for your visit:

  • Be sure you get the property manager's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home.
  • To ensure that damages are not linked to your stay, record any problem areas during arrival. Make contact with the property manager right away to relay any issues. If there is a dispute, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, stereo or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent quite a few issues.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a fantastic resource to find the best local beaches.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Lock your rental property while you are gone! Don't let thieves spoil your trip.
  • Double-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed all personal items at departure. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the property a final time and look for damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, remember to take photos and video of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a wonderful time? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your property and/or host was wonderful, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
