Tips and Tricks for getting the best rental home experience:

Sticking to a budget:

  • In the Hatteras area, The earlier you can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental properties are booked very early. Reserving your vacation property six to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental.
  • Summertime is high season in Buxton. To book the best vacation home within budget, we strongly suggest booking in Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at restaurants, beaches, and activities.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Property management companies often offer guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guides have deals for nearby tours and attractions.

Make a plan and choose a perfectrental:

  • To start, have your family decide on trip dates and a spending budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group needs. Hotel Room: Queen Bed, 100 meters from oceanfront has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed types is usually available online. If you don't see them listed, call the property owner before you book the rental. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to determine what configuration is suitable for your vacation family.
  • Some properties allow pets, and others do not. Acceptable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added costs may apply. Ask the host about your furry family members before booking.
  • If there's an individual Hatteras attraction you crave, browse homes that are either nearby, or those that cater to your requirements.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking

Additional considerations:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Add a note with the directions to your smartphone, and take a printed copy.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, A/V setup or thermostat. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents lots of concerns.
  • Keep your rental home locked while you are away! Don't let thieves ruin your holiday.
  • At Check-in, document any issues with the property and immediately alert the host. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors disrupting your life at home. Apply the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and attractions you would have not otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Just before checking out, complete a walk-through to make sure you have not forget any personal items. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property a final time and look for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, remember to take pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a great time? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your property and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
