Strategies for getting the best vacation home experience:

When to visit & When to book:

  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer is the most expensive season in the Hatteras area. Book your rental in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season.
  • Property managers sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if special offers are available for your family before you book.
  • Property management companies often offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guide magazines have discounts for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.

Planning and choosing the right Hatteras rental home:

  • Choose dates and budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. I had to cancel my condo rental - You reap the Benefit of a DEEP DISCOUNT has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is often available online. If you don't see them listed, email the property manager before you reserve your rental. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and others don't. Acceptable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the host about your furry family members before booking.
  • If there's an individual Hatteras beach you love, look for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your needs.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

More considerations for your visit:

  • Put the owner's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, elevator or WIFI setup. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents many concerns.
  • Keep the property locked while you're away! Don't let thieves ruin your trip.
  • Make a record of any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are valuable if damages are assessed.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Re-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Re-check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your group have a fantastic vacation? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your property and/or host was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
