Tricks and tips to get the best vacation rental experience:

When to go & When to reserve a Rodanthe rental home:

  • Summer is the most expensive season in coastal NC. Reserve your rental property in Spring or Fall to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
  • In the Hatteras area, The earlier you can book a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The best vacation homes are booked early. Reserving your rental property up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and book your rental property.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Property management companies typically offer renters an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Many property management companies supply Hatteras area travel guides which often include special deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • To start, have your family decide on dates and a budget.
  • Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. OBX Family Home and additional Beach Cottage has 6 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always accessible on booking websites. If not, contact the property owner before you reserve your home. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Are you visiting for a single attraction or event? If so, use a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. .
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, search for a property that allows animals. Ask for details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Usually, property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.

Tips for a great stay:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental. Store the host's information in your smartphone.
  • Make a record of any damages to the property during check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, television set or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent quite a few issues.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers bothering your home life. Practice the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and places you would've never otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Keep the property locked while you're away! Don't let crooks spoil your vacation.
  • Just before checking out, take a final walk-through to make sure you haven't forget any personal items. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the host isn't available, remember to take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did you have a great vacation? Many rental managers make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your property and/or property management company was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
