Getting the best Hatteras vacation rental experience:

Getting the most from your budget:

  • In the Hatteras area, The earlier you can book a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The best rental properties are reserved early. Reserving your vacation home six to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental.
  • Summertime is high season in Hatteras. To get the best value, consider shifting your vacation week to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner if your family qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Property management companies typically offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guide magazines contain offers and deals for nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.

Planning and picking the perfect Hatteras rental home:

  • Start by having your family agree to trip dates and a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Charming Studio w\/ Free WiFi, Kitchenette, & an Ocean View from the Rooftop Deck has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is normally accessible online. If you don't see them listed, email the property owner before reserving the property. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds. You will need to determine what bed configuration is suitable for your vacation group.
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and some do not. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the host about pet restrictions before booking.
  • Are you visiting for a single attraction? Use a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. .

Additional considerations:

  • We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents quite a few problems.
  • Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Record any damages to the property during check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be valuable if a dispute is filed.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful vacationers disrupting your peaceful home. Use the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, walk through the rental property to make sure you've collected all belongings. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Please make sure to walk through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the manager is not available, ensure that you take photos and video of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did you have a terrific time? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
