Tricks and tips to get the perfect vacation property experience:
Finding the best value:
- Summer time is high season in the Hatteras area. To book the most suitable rental for your budget, we recommend booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Owners sometimes offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group.
- Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally costs 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Hatteras visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guides contain money saving offers on nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.
Choosing and booking your prefectrental:
- Choose a group leader, choose your vacation week, and choose a spending budget.
- Sleeps 8 has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is normally available on booking pages. If not, contact the property management company before booking the vacation home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to determine what configuration is right for your family.
- Visiting for a single attraction? If so, use a map search to browse nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are included before booking
- Some rentals allow pets, but some do not. Acceptable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the property management company about pet restrictions before booking.
More considerations for your visit:
- Get the owner's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home. Store the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- Document any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately contact the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be useful if there is a dispute.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or WIFI setup. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent quite a few difficulties.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often an excellent source for finding the best local beaches.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically help. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Keep your rental home locked while you are away! Don't let thieves ruin your family vacation.
- Double-check the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all personal items on check-out day. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your family have a terrific stay? Most rental managers make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your property and/or property manager was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was out of order and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
