Tricks and tips to get the optimal rental home experience:
Cost saving strategies:
- The sooner your group can reserve a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The best rental homes are reserved early. Booking your vacation home up to 12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your rental property.
- Book your rental in Spring or Fall to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager if your family qualifies for a price reduction.
- Property management companies typically offer renters an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
- Often, property management companies supply Hatteras area travel guides that include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- Begin by selecting vacation dates and a maximum budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Water-view home with private pool, hot tub, game room, amazing decks, & elevator has 8 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is generally accessible online. If not, email or call the property owner before you book your home. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to determine what bed configuration is suitable for your trip.
- If your family is bringing pets, you will need a rental that allows animals. Get information on breed, size, and type restrictions. Often, hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
- If there's a certain Hatteras attraction you love, browse rentals that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental.
More considerations for your visit:
- We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Document any damages to the property during check in, and immediately contact the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Be respectful of your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
- On check-out day, take a walk-through to make sure you did not leave anything behind. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the property a final time and scan for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager is not available, remember to take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your group have a wonderful vacation? Many rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your property and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was defective and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
