Rental home tips and tricks:
When to book & When to go:
- Summer time is high season in the Hatteras area. Booking your Hatteras vacation home in Fall or Spring is our favorite way to save money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable homes. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- The earlier you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The best rental homes are reserved early. Booking your rental property six to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your group qualifies for a special rate.
- Property managers typically offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Often, property management companies supply Hatteras area visitor guides which will include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Choosing and booking the rightvacation home:
- Start by selecting your potential vacation weeks and a max budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Semi Oceanfront Lot, 3rd house back, 2 king beds & bunk bed, Ocean & Sound Views has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras vacation rental search.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed types is generally available online. Otherwise, contact the property manager before you book your home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to establish what is suitable for your trip.
- If there's a specific Hatteras attraction you are crazy about, browse properties that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
- If your group is vacationing with pets, search for a rental that allows animals. Ask for information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Be aware that some property owners charge additional pet fees.
Tips for your stay:
- Add the host's phone number to your phone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- During arrival, record any damages to the property and immediately alert the owner. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are an incredible source for finding the best local scenic spots.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental when you are out, just like you would back home.
- When it's time to leave, complete a final walk-through to make sure you didn't forget any personal items. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the rental a final time and look for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on great ratings to compel new bookings. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your feedback find their best rental home. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
