Tips to get the perfect Hatteras vacation home experience:
When to go & When to reserve a rental home:
- Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer months are the most expensive season in coastal NC. Booking your vacation rental in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is a great way to save money on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Property management companies sometimes offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group.
- Property managers usually offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for details.
- Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hatteras area visitors guide magazines which will include coupons, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Filter your rental search:
- Start by selecting trip dates and a spending budget.
- Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Dog-friendly home with private pool, hot tub, fast WiFi & AC has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Precise details about bedrooms and bed counts is commonly available online. If they are not listed, email or call the property management company before you book the rental. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to work out what configuration is optimal for your family.
- If your family is vacationing with pets, search for a pet-friendly property. Request details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
- Are you visiting for a specific event? Use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking.
Know before you go:
- Put the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home when you are out, just like you would back home.
- Upon arrival, make note of any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the host. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a great source for finding the best local beaches.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can often help. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Double-check the property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings on check-out day. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Leave a review! Property managers rely on good ratings to inspire future bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationers will will be grateful for your review and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
