Strategies to get the very best vacation home experience:
How to get the best rental value:
- June, July, and August are high season in the Hatteras area. To get the best vacation home for your budget, we highly recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Hatteras vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Some property management companies offer special rates for active duty military and veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
- Property managers typically offer their guests an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
- Often, management companies and vacation rental houses supply Hatteras area travel guide magazines which include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Planning, picking, and booking your prefectrental home:
- Begin by choosing your vacation dates and a max budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Private Studio Room with Pool—Steps to both Ocean and Sound! has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Hatteras vacation rental search.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed types is often accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email the property manager before you reserve the home. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to work out what is suitable for your family.
- Visiting for a single event or attraction? If so, use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you'll need to find a pet-friendly vacation rental. Ask for information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Note that some property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
Some things to know before you go:
- Take a copy of the owner's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your .
- Upon check-in, record any issues with the property and immediately contact the host. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, intercom or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent a lot of difficulties.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant vacationers disrupting your peace and quiet. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and places you would've never otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are away, just like you would at home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, walk through the property to make sure you've collected all of your things. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a great stay? Many rental websites make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your rental and/or host was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
