Strategies to get the optimal vacation home experience:

Finding the best value:

  • Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • To get the best value, consider changing your group's vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer excellent temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
  • Some property managers offer discounts for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
  • Property management companies frequently offer renters an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
  • Often, rental management companies supply Hatteras area travel guides that include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Hatteras area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Filter your rental search:

  • Select your vacation dates and spending budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the configuration you need. Private Studio Room with Pool—Steps to both Ocean and Sound! has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is commonly accessible on booking websites. If not, call the property owner before booking the rental. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, you'll need to book a property that allows animals. Make sure to ask for information on breed, size, and type restrictions. Some hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • If there's a certain Hatteras destination you love, browse properties that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Make a record of any damages to the property during check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be beneficial if a dispute is filed.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers bothering your peaceful home. Practice the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and places you would've never otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all personal items. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the rental a final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a terrific stay? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
